Happy February! I hope everyone is off to a good start in 2024. For me, it has been very chaotic, but I like to say it’s controlled chaos! Lol! The new year always brings me great joy, so I can reset my goals and priorities. I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I set goals all throughout the year and like to divide them out into quarters. One big goal is to keep bringing fun, creative tips to you here! I love doing the Tips from Tonia and after my last GMT segment, Jane asked me a question about organizing in apartment pantries, and it got me thinking……I need to do some tips for organizing in small spaces. We all have our challenges when it comes to vertical space, small areas, and maximizing drawer space. I wanted to give you some tips on how to organize some of these areas!
- The first step in organizing not just small spaces is decluttering. Get rid of anything that you no longer use or need in this particular area. This will help you evaluate exactly what organizational products you need. Good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used these items in 1-2 years, it’s probably a good item to purge.
- If you are organizing a closet, you might use the wall to hang things. Example: my daughter just recently found an organizer on Amazon to organize her belts. She didn’t have any more drawer space because it is a small closet, so she attached a pocket divider to her wall.
- Go vertical in your space! If you have a small pantry, you might use some stair risers for your canned goods, or plate risers for your cabinets for your dishes. I have used these a number of times because in my kitchen my cabinets are not adjustable, so it doesn’t allow me to adjust my vertical space.
- Use your under-stair area for storage! I turned my under-stair storage into a craft closet and homework supplies for my kiddos and it’s been a great area, that’s not cluttering up my kitchen!
- If you have a room that serves as a multi-functional room, separate the rooms into zones. For example, if you have a pseudo workout room and you have a sewing section, you want to separate all the supplies and the workout zones, etc. This gives you ample space for both activities!
This biggest obstacle for most of us is actually getting started! We are all busy, have lots of deadlines for work, or kids’ activities that take up time and energy. Schedule one Saturday or one afternoon for 4 hours and see how far you can get! You’d be surprised at how much you can get done in a small amount of time if you put the time aside. Take a picture and let me know what spaces you are working on in your home.
