This month for Tips from Tonia, I decided to talk about how I organized my laundry room with Sorted Out. Yes, you heard that right, I hired my own company to help me sort out my space. I find myself running from clients, to meetings, to my sons’ sporting events, and I just haven’t had the time to organize my laundry room. I haven’t organized it since 2020, and it really needed some refreshing. You can see that from the photos here! Spring cleaning is a great time to refresh your home, and organizing your laundry room can make a huge difference! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you organize your laundry room and get your space back once and for all:
- Clear Everything Out
Start by completely emptying out of your laundry room. Take out all the laundry, cleaning supplies, and anything that’s been gathering dust or sitting unused. This will give you a fresh canvas and help you assess the space. I had MANY items that needed purging, and it felt so good to let them go!
- Sort and Declutter
Sort through items: Check everything for items that are expired, broken, or that you haven’t used in a while. Donate or dispose of things you no longer need. I was able to donate old bins & cleaning supplies I hadn’t used in a few years.
Group similar items: Group laundry detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets, and cleaning supplies together. This will help you see exactly what you have and avoid duplicates.
- Clean the Space
Dust and wipe down surfaces: Sweep the floor, wipe down counters, shelves, and even the washing machine and dryer.
Deep clean: Consider washing any rugs or mats, cleaning your washer and dryer (especially lint traps), and scrubbing the sink or other surfaces.
Line your space: I like to line my cabinets, so they are protected from detergents etc. This is a bit time-consuming, but worth it when things spill, and I am not upset about it not ruining my cabinets.
- Maximize Vertical Storage
Install shelves or cabinets above the washer/dryer to store extra supplies and laundry baskets. This will keep things off the floor and free up valuable space.
You could also use hooks for hanging items like ironing boards, spray bottles, or brooms.
- Use Bins and Baskets
Organize by category: Use bins to store cleaning products, laundry pods, fabric softeners, and other supplies. Label them for easy identification.
Laundry baskets or hampers: Use separate baskets for different types of laundry (delicates, towels, darks, etc.). Consider getting foldable or stackable hampers to save space.
Clear bins: I have multiple people in my home, so for ease of organization, I opted for clear bins. Easy for others to see what’s in there and easy for them to put things away. Make it fool proof for others!
- Create a Folding/Hanging Clothes Station
Dedicate a surface for folding laundry (like a countertop or a folding table). This can help prevent laundry piles from building up in the room.
Consider adding an ironing board or a spot for steaming clothes if you do that in the laundry room.
- Organize Your Laundry Area
Drawer dividers: If you have drawers in your laundry room, use dividers to keep smaller items organized, such as lint rollers, stain removers, or dryer balls.
Drying racks or rods: If you air dry clothes, use a drying rack or install a rod for hanging items that need air drying. Here is the one I bought years ago.
- Label Everything
Label your bins, baskets, and shelves so you know where everything goes. This will also help everyone in the household keep the space organized.
- Maintain the Organization
Establish habits: Once everything is organized, make sure to maintain the cleanliness by putting things back in their designated spots after every use.
Revisit every season: Regularly check your laundry room for clutter and ensure everything stays neat. Doing this once a season helps maintain order. I like to do my maintenance in the springtime!
Hopefully, these tips will energize you to tackle that dreaded laundry room! If you are struggling with this space (like I was), of course we are here to help. Happy spring cleaning! 😊
